Whales spend all their lives in the ocean.
But they are more like land animals, whales have lungs.
They breathe throught openings on the tops of their heads.
Those holes are like our nose openings or nostrils.
Whales are unable to breathe in underwater.
Like land animals they have legs.
But those are shaped like flippers.
Though whales are so huge, many of them eat
small fish or shrimp
They do not have teeth but have rows of strong bony
strips instead.
Those are called baleen.
Whales suck sea water through these rows of baleen.
The baleen traps small fishes, shrimp and sea plants
called plankton.
A whale stranded on land is helpless.
The whale’s weight will crush its lungs its lungs.
Its flippers are useless on land.
The whales are very much like a land animal.
